Kimekomi Dolls

Tadashige Takahashi, who worked at the Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto in the mid 1700’s developed this technique. Using leftover pieces of wood and kimono fabrics, Edo Kimekomi were originally made by hand carving a doll body and inscribing grooves into the shape, into which cloth was inserted. In the late 1800’s, the method of casting a clay body from a mold was developed, making mass production possible.
